Botswana is a vast, sparsely populated country, mostly desert but with the most prolific wetlands in Africa. Holidays here are thrilling, and it’s well worth the effort required to reach some of the more remote places.

The reserves of Chobe, Savuti, the prolific Moremi and the unique Okavango Delta are sensational destinations for Botswana safari adventures, both in the summer – for birds, especially – and in the dry autumn, winter and spring months, for bigger game. It is the largest elephant corridor in the world and the herds along the Chobe River can number in their thousands. Botswana Safari Highlights

Thanks to the country’s stable government and progressive social policies, Botswana is now one of Southern Africa’s hottest safari destinations. Here are four great places to visit in Botswana for animal lovers.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve: The second largest wildlife reserve in the world (20,000 square miles), the Kalahari Desert is the ancestral home of the Bushmen people. Its diverse array of animals includes Lions, Leopards, Hyenas, Wild Dogs, dozens of Antelope species, and many more. The area’s annual Zebra migration is spectacular, but little-known.
Chobe National Park: Chobe is home to over 120,000 Elephants– about 1/3 of the continent’s total population. The park offers lots of different ecosystems to explore, including savannah, swamps, floodplains, and mopane woodlands. Besides Elephants, Chobe National Park is a great place to see big cats, which are largely found in the Liyanti Marshes.
Makgadikgadi Pans: These are the world’s largest salt pans in the world. When flooded, the area is visited by thousands of Zebras, Wildebeest, and Flamingoes. But even when they’re dry, the Makgadikgadi Pans are worth a visit for their surreal beauty. Visit at sunset to get stunning photos framed by the silhouettes of ancient Baobab trees.
Okavango Delta: The most famous of Botswana’s many ecotourism attractions, the Okavango Delta’s 5791-square mile wetland area earned UNESCO protected status in 2014. In the winter its myriad canals and swamps attract some 200,000 large mammals (Cheetahs, Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Wild Dogs, etc.) and over 400 bird species, including the Crested Crane, Hammerkop, and Sacred Ibis.

This country is so diverse and exodus shows you that from the start! We started on the Caribbean side at Tortuguero and basically got soaked the whole 3 days we were there, it rained and it rained but our group got on with it with a smile. That area would have been wonderful if the weather hadn’t been against us but it was what it was!
We still suffered a bit of bad weather at Arenal and i never got to see the volcano as the cloud was on top of it all the time, the walk was lovely up to it though and the landscape is beautiful.
The weather started to improve as we travelled over to the pacific side , the birds and the wildlife are abundant , we saw that many sloths on this trip we stopped taking pictures of them ha
There are some long drives in this trip but never more than a couple of hours on the road without stopping, lots of views to look at and of course we stopped if the driver or guide saw anything interesting to see as well, (a couple of macaw’s were spotted and we pulled over to get some great photos)
The wildlife is all around you if you take the time to look, the leaf cutter ants and the ant highways through the forest floor , the frogs , the sloths… so much to see!
Whilst you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic for this trip , i would suggest that you are able to walk long distances and tackle some steep slopes. You can always sit by the pool if you don’t want to go on the hikes but you would miss out on the whole point of the holiday if that is what you aim to do.
Exodus pull it out the bag every time with the accommodation , all the rooms were lovely and well chosen , its one of the reasons i have booked with Exodus 4 times now.
